Multiplying with Algebra Tiles

[Back]

Visit the Utah State University Virtual Library of Mathematics Manipulatives.  Access the Algebra Tiles activity and work on the problems below.  Follow these tips for multiplying using the virtual algebra tiles:

1) Maximize and Clear the work area

2) Add the tiles that represent the factors to the “sideline” area so as to create the “empty” rectangle

3) Add matching tiles to the main work area to fill the rectangle

Model the following problems using algebra tiles, then write the simplified answer next to the right:

a)    2(3)

b)    3(x)

c)    (2x)(3x)

d)    2(x + 1)

e)    3(x + 3)

f)     x(x + 2)

g)    3x(x + 1)
