Essential Question: How can you represent quantities, patterns and relationships?

Properties
Essential Question: How are properties related to algebra?

Lesson/Objective Supplemental Lessons On-line Practice Homework
1-1  Variables and Expressions

Objective:  To write algebraic expressions from word phrases and vice versa

ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDING: Algebra uses symbols to represent quantities that are known or that vary. You can represent mathematical phrases and real-world relationships using symbols and operations.

hw#1-1: Due Mon Sep 10 (both grade 7 & 8)

Read Sections 1-1 & 1-2 in the textbook

Exercises:
pg 7-9 #1-51 every 3rd problem i.e. #3,6,9,...

pg 13-15 #1-60 every 4th problem i.e. #4,8,12,...

I know some problems don't require much "work", BUT in order for you to be successful in this class, you will need to SHOW ALL POSSIBLE WORK that you can... I will be a pain-in-the-#$@! when it comes to showing work... GET USED TO IT!

1-2  Order of Operations and Evaluating Expressions

Objectives:  To simplify expressions involving exponents.

To use the order of operations to evaluate expressions,

ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDING: You can use powers to shorten how you represent repeated multiplication, such as 2 X 2 X 2 X 2.

1-3  Real Numbers and the Number Line

Objectives:  To classify, graph, and compare real numbers

To find and estimate square roots

ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDING: Numbers can be classified by their characteristics. Some types of numbers can be represented on the real number line.

The definition of a square root can be used to find the exact square roots of some non-negative numbers. The square roots of other non-negative numbers can be approximated.

1-4  Properties of Real Numbers

Objective:  To identify and use properties of real numbers

ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDING: The rules for multiplying real numbers are related to the properties of real numbers and the definitions of operations. Multiplication and division can sometimes be thought of as shortcuts for addition and subtraction.

Quiz will cover sections 1-1 thru 1-6; emphasis in 1-5 and 1-6 will be integers as opposed to decimals and fractions

1-7  The Distributive Property

Objective: To use the distributive property to simplify expressions

ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDING: The distributive property can be used to simplify the product of a number and a sum or a difference. An algebraic expression can be simplified by combining parts of the expression that are alike.
