Variables and Expressions
Objective: To write algebraic expressions from word phrases and vice versa ESSENTIAL
UNDERSTANDING: Algebra uses symbols to represent quantities that
are known or that vary. You can represent mathematical phrases and
realworld relationships using symbols and operations.

hw#11: Due Mon
Sep 10 (both grade 7 & 8)
Read Sections 11 & 12 in the textbook Exercises: pg 1315 #160 every 4th problem i.e. #4,8,12,... I know some problems don't require much "work", BUT in order for you to be successful in this class, you will need to SHOW ALL POSSIBLE WORK that you can... I will be a paininthe#$@! when it comes to showing work... GET USED TO IT!

12
Order of Operations and Evaluating Expressions Objectives: To simplify expressions involving exponents. To use the order of operations to evaluate expressions, ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDING: You can use powers to shorten how you represent repeated multiplication, such as 2 X 2 X 2 X 2.

13
Real Numbers and the Number Line
Objectives: To classify, graph, and compare real numbers To find and estimate square roots ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDING: Numbers can be classified by their characteristics. Some types of numbers can be represented on the real number line. The definition of a square root can be
used to find the exact square roots of some nonnegative numbers. The
square roots of other nonnegative numbers can be approximated.

hw#12
& 13 BOTH Due Weds Sep 12 (both grade 7 & 8) hw #12 pg 2021 #955 Odd I expect you to read lesson 13 and attempt to figure things out on your own... you can ask questions on the blog! hw #13pg 34 #3060 mult of 3 pg 42 #3060 mult of 3

15
Adding and Subtracting Real Numbers Objective: To find sums and differences of real numbers ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDING:
You can add or subtract any real numbers using a number line model or
integer counters. You can also add or sbtract real numbers using rules
involving absolute value.

16
Multiplying and Dividing Real Numbers
Objective: To find products and quotients of real numbers

14
Properties of Real Numbers
Objective: To identify and use properties of real numbers ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDING:
The rules for multiplying real numbers are related to the properties of
real numbers and the definitions of operations. Multiplication and
division can sometimes be thought of as shortcuts for addition and
subtraction.

hw #14 Due Fri
Sep 14 pg 29 #119 ALL pg 44 #6678 ALL QUIZ PREP!! hw #16 Due Fri Sep 21 AND... Unit 1 Problem Set A... some of you escaped class today without this!
UNIT 1 QUIZ postponed until:
FRIDAY, SEPT. 21st

17
The Distributive Property Objective: To use the distributive property to simplify expressions ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDING:
The distributive property can be used to simplify the product of a number
and a sum or a difference. An algebraic expression can be simplified by
combining parts of the expression that are alike.

hw #17 Due Tues Sept 25

18
An Introduction to Equations Objective: To solve equations using tables and mental math

SKIP... we'll take this up in the next unit!
19
Patterns, Equations, and Graphs Objective: To use tables, equations, and graphs to describe relationships ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDING:
Sometimes the value of one quantity can be found if the value of another
is known. The relationship between the quantities can be represented in
different ways, including tables, equations, and graphs (oh my!).
